Advice to Freshmen

Weekly feature where successful seniors offer advice to the Freshmen class

This week''s Advice to Freshmen is offered by Senior Jessica May.

 1. What was your first thought about high school?

      - When I started high school, I was excited and ready for something different. High school was a lot different from middle school and I actually liked it.

 2. How was your first semster of high school different from middle school?

      - Well, it was nice being able to know I only had four teachers each semeter instead of having the same 8 classes with the same 8 teachers all year round.

 3. What would you recommend telling the freshman class of next year?

      - It's normal to be worried about how you will fit in or if you will get around, but odds are that you know some upperclassmen who will gladly help you.

4.  Grades!  Do more people goof off?  Is it harder than middle school?

     - High school isn't harder, it's just that you think it will be harder than it actually will be.  And people goofing off happens no matter what grade they are in.

5.  Finding your way around?

     - Finding your way around PV is honestly not hard and everyone is nice about helping you find your way.

6.  How are the 9th grade teachers?

     - It all depends on the teacher.  Some teachers are super easy and nice and then some are not so nice and easy.  Your 9th grade year will fly by.  Don't worry about it and you'll do fine.

Silent Sustained Reading

BY Tony Baldwin and James Dishner
PANTHER PRESS REPORTERS

PikeView High school has recently started a new curriculum program where, instead of going to seminar, first block is extended and we read for 15 minutes for three days out of the week. It was put in place to help the learning experience for the students. Godfrey has said that it will help boost student imagination and creativity, along with expanding our vocabulary and knowledge of whatever subject a student is reading about. In a month this adds up to 3 hours of critical reading for a student. For those who don’t have time to read otherwise, this is a great opportunity for them to expand their mental capabilities.

There are many subjects that a student could choose from for their Silent Sustained Reading time. You can bring books, newspapers, magazines, short stories, poems and anything in between. With all of these capabilities, a student can really broaden their horizons and extend their knowledge in all kinds of subjects. Recent studies show that reading can help improve standardized test scores, ACT scores, and SAT scores. We think this new Silent Sustained Reading program that has been put into place is a good idea and will help improve student education.
